Progressive download is perhaps the most popular method for consumption of video on the web in use today. Consumers seamlessly receive a high quality real-time viewing experience, whilst in the background the video file is downloaded to disk.
Progressive download provides a viewing experience identical to video streaming with a reduced risk of interruption as the file is being downloaded and buffered at the same time. Progressive download therefore offers a reliable and cost effective alternative to our pure streaming services.
The Velocix Video Progressive Download service is also content agnostic and can deliver Flash, Windows Media, DivX, QuickTime, Real, 3GP and other popular video formats.
When combined with the Velocix Variable Class of Service delivery capability, download speeds can be tuned to encoding rates. So, for example, if a video was encoded at 700kbps, its delivery speed could be set at 750kbps, rather than the default full speed of >8mpbs. This reduces delivery costs and prevents the entire video from being downloaded in situations where the viewer exits before the end. The content owner only pays for what the consumer has watched!
