Verizon is pursuing a major strategic initiative to create its own high performance - low cost video distribution network. Verizon’s goal is to differentiate its broadband connectivity services by providing a wide range of broadcast quality premium video entertainment to its 8.5m Broadband consumers.
Traditionally Verizon has turned to independent CDN (Content Delivery Network) providers for assistance in delivering video content to its subscribers. However, the cost of delivering large volumes of video content this way is prohibitive and restricted Verizon’s ability to move aggressively into the video services arena.
Verizon is deploying Velocix to create a bespoke content delivery network (CDN) within its FioS access network that offers content owners and distributors a new and efficient pathway to their subscriber base. As a first step, Verizon has formed a commercial relationship with Starz Entertainment to provide their Starz Play service via Velocix.
