Content Ingest

Velocix recognises that Content Owners have varying workflows and so offers a range of flexible content ingestion mechanisms to enable seamless integration with the Velocix CDN. Ingestion methods vary, typically depending on the type of content; whether it is Live, Video on Demand (VOD) or Adaptive content stored on Origin Servers.

Pre-Published Content

In order to make content such as Video on Demand (VOD) catalogues available for distribution via the Velocix CDN they are first ingested or published into the CDN.  In order to integrate seamlessly with established workflows and Content Management Systems, the Velocix CDN provides a wide range of flexible, industry standard interfaces to accommodate this such as; FTP / FTPeS, ,RSYNC, Aspera, WebDAV, Rest HTTP and Vx XML/RPC. In addition Velocix provides extensive programmatic API capabilities to enable tight integration with Content Management Systems and processes enabling the Content Owner to fully automate their content publishing & management workflow.

On-Demand Acquistion

Velocix also supports Reverse Proxy Acquisition to pull any format of HTTP Adaptive Streaming content directly from an Origin Server, or encoder depending on the format. The Origin Server is the first element in the cache chain: it ensures that every single object is available and delivers it through Reverse Proxy Acquisition when the object is requested through its URL by an intermediary cache or an end device.

Traditionally using this model for high demand live streamed content over a highly distributed network can lead to overloading of the Origin Servers. To mitigate against this the Velocix CDN solution introduces the concept of Hierarchical Shield Caches.

Multi-Tier Hierarchical Caches

Unique to Velocix, intermediary Delivery Appliances (iDA) can be configured at strategic points throughout the CDN network to act as multi-tier hierarchical caches to protect the Origin Servers from excessive demand and negating the need for the Content owner, in case of the Origin Server belongs also to the Content owner, to invest in additional bandwidth capacity at their Origin point to cope with additional demand.

 N-level hierarchical caching allows Service Providers to tune hierarchical distribution topologies for flexible combinations of services.

Content Publishing & Storage Appliances

Publishing Appliances

All content which is pre-published to the CDN is automatically processed by the Velocix Publishing Appliance which breaks the content down into smaller chunks and generates hashes.  The Chunking process is unique to Velocix and enables efficient multisource replication and delivery of content throughout the network whilst ensuring the integrity of the content itself.

Storage Appliances

Once processed by the Publishing Appliance, pre-published content is automatically and transparently replicated out to Velocix Storage Appliances.  Normally deployed across multiple geographic locations, Storage Appliances provide the master vault for all pre-published content such as VOD catalogues.  Stored content is hashed and verified automatically and automatically replicated across multiple Storage Appliances giving the Content Owner peace of mind that uploading content is a one-shot operation. Velocix Storage Appliances are available in a range of sizes and are industry proven to be scalable up to multiple Petabyte solutions.  As a result they are able to cater to a diverse range of VOD catalogue sizes and requirements.
